What is bitrate?

Bitrate is the amount of data used per second of video, usually expressed in kbps or Mbps. A higher bitrate means better image quality but a bigger file. Knowing the right bitrate matters when exporting, streaming or trying to meet a platform's size limit.

Two modes

  • Mode A: enter an existing file's size and duration to find its average bitrate
  • Mode B: enter a target bitrate and duration to estimate the file size before exporting

Example

A 10-minute video exported at 8 Mbps is about 600 MB. Calculations happen instantly in your browser.

How to use Video Bitrate Calculator

  1. Choose the calculation mode.
  2. Enter the file size or bitrate and the duration.
  3. The result updates as you type.
  4. Use the value in your export or streaming settings.

Why use this tool?

Choose the right setting up front instead of exporting over and over by trial and error.

FAQ

Does the result include audio?

The calculated average covers everything in the file, video and audio together.

What bitrate suits a 1080p video?

YouTube recommends about 8 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 60 fps.

Are Mbps and MB/s the same?

No. One byte is 8 bits; 8 Mbps is roughly 1 MB of data per second.
