What is a canonical tag?

When the same content can be reached through several URLs (for example ?utm_source=..., ?sort=price or with and without www), search engines may not know which is the main page. That splits ranking signals and causes duplicate content issues. The rel="canonical" tag tells search engines your preferred main URL.

URL normalisation

  • Lowercases the host
  • Removes default ports (:80, :443)
  • Removes # fragments
  • Optionally strips tracking parameters like utm or all query parameters

You get a clean absolute URL and a link tag ready for your page's head. Processing happens in your browser.

How to use Canonical URL Generator

  1. Paste the page URL.
  2. Choose which parameters to remove.
  3. Check the normalised canonical URL.
  4. Copy the link tag into your page's head.

FAQ

Should the canonical URL be absolute?

Yes. Always use a full absolute URL including https://.

Should every page have a self-referencing canonical?

Yes, a self-referencing canonical ties parameterised copies back to the main page and is good practice.

What's the difference between canonical and a 301 redirect?

A 301 sends users and bots to another address; a canonical keeps the page accessible and only tells search engines the preferred address.
