Find names in text automatically

Named Entity Recognition is the NLP task of detecting people, organisations, places and other proper names in text. It's used to analyse news archives, extract lists of people and companies from documents, or find sensitive names before anonymising data.

Labels

  • PER: person names
  • ORG: companies, institutions, organisations
  • LOC: cities, countries, geographic places
  • MISC: nationalities, events and other names

Entities are highlighted in the text and listed with confidence scores; export the results as CSV.

Model

The tool uses a BERT model fine-tuned for NER and trained on English news text. Dates, numbers and amounts aren't among its labels. Your text is processed on your device.

How to use AI Named Entity Recognizer (NER)

  1. Paste your English text.
  2. The model detects the entities.
  3. Review the highlighted entities and scores.
  4. Export the results as CSV.

Why use this tool?

No, this model only labels people, organisations, places and other names.

Can I use it to anonymise personal data?

It can help find names, but it may not catch every one. Always check manually after anonymising.
